Miami Dolphins 2023 Preview

Miami Dolphins 2023 Preview. The only team with a more challenging schedule than Miami is their division rival New England Patriots. Maybe that will help the Dolphins edge past the Patriots in the standings this season, but Miami is targeting the Bills to win the AFC East. Is it possible? That depends on the changes they’ve made in the off-season.

It’s Not IF Tagovailoa Will Get Injured – It’s When and for How Long

Tagovailoa will be the starter for the Dolphins again this season. He’s a standout quarterback that can take this team pretty far, that is if he can stay healthy. He has been injury-prone since college, suffering a nasty hip injury that prematurely ended his college career in 2019. In his NFL rookie year, Tagovailoa experienced a thumb injury during practice and missed Week 12. He sustained rib fractures in Week 2 and a fracture of the middle finger of his throwing arm to miss Week 9, in 2021. In 2022, he had three head injuries, limiting this season to 13 games. He missed the final two regular-season games and their playoff loss to Buffalo.

There’s no question that he can take this team into the playoffs, but that’s if he’s healthy. The Dolphins have not won a playoff game for 22 seasons. They last won in 2000 against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. At least, it was this century.

Knowing the potential for injury, the back office has been hard at work finding the best backup quarterback for Tagovailoa. That position should be filled by either Mike White or Skylar Thompson.

Mike White was with the Jets last season, where he had a 58.9% completion rate, 1,192 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, four interceptions, and two fumbles in the four games he started. He wasn’t always consistent in his play, and word is that his OTAs performance did not impress.

Skylar Thompson had a 57.1% completion rate in his 2022 season, with 534 yards, one passing touchdown, three interceptions, and two fumbles. He was chosen as the starting quarterback against the Bills in the Wild Card game, where they were 14-point underdogs. Skylar Thompson had a respectable game, throwing 220 yards and one touchdown in a 34-31 loss. He has the strongest arm of the three and is the best athlete, but he is also plagued by injuries.

Dolphins Defense 2023

In some ways, the defense has been retooled to position itself as entirely different from last season. That starts with the new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

After being with the Titans for four years, David Long signed with the team on March 17, 2023. He is a middle linebacker with excellent pass coverage that will boost defense with his leader mentality.

Christian Wilkins is the heart and soul that stops the run. He’s a defensive tackle who might not have a lot of sacks but had the most solo tackles (59) of any defensive lineman in the NFL last season.

Xavien Howard plays better when he’s number two. The soft-spoken cornerback will be able to keep his eyes on the quarterback to see where he’s making his play. Howard struggled with groin injuries last season but should be healthy and ready to go with his number-one partner.

Jalen Ramsey, whose outspoken confidence and talent will be the guiding light for the rest of the defense to step up against all the top teams they’ll be taking on this year.

Dolphins Sports Betting Software Predictions

Miami did well last year by making the playoffs for the first time in six years. They plan on repeating that target along with winning a playoff game. They currently have -105 odds of making the playoffs. That might seem favorable, but the Jets are -140, and the Bills are -250.

Their over/under of 9.5 wins shows how much they have improved in the off-season. Winning double digits against teams like the Chiefs, Eagles, Bills, Chargers, Ravens, and Cowboys is no easy feat.

  • Odds to Win the AFC East: +275
  • Odds to Win the AFC Conference: +1300
  • Odds to Win the Super Bowl: +2500
