College Football Week 5 2023 Preview

No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Michigan, and No. 3 Texas remain in the same spot as last week. Everyone else has moved by at least one position. Washington State jumped from 21 to 16. Oregon State dropped from 14 to 19. The Colorado Buffaloes fell out of the rankings. New Teams have entered, including No. 23 Missouri, No. 24 Kansas, and No. 25 Fresno State.

Friday night with Utah (4-0) at Oregon State (3-1)

Utah keeps winning even without their star quarterback, Cam Rising. Nate Johnson was the replacement for their game against UCLA, but he can thank their defense for winning that one. UCLA’s offense was kept to only 163 yards and a 25% third-down conversion rate in the first three quarters.

Utah’s coach, Kyle Whittingham, says Rising has been practicing and looks good. He can’t remember when he’s had so many top players on the injury list, almost 20. So far, he’s been able to make modifications and combinations that work without Rising and the others, but he’d like to have them back soon.

Oregon State is a legitimate Pac-12 contender, but they dropped the ball on their last game against Washington State. They allowed 28 points and 352 yards in the first half alone. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei also had an interception and turnover on downs.

Two points favor the Utes, but that could change if any of their injured players are fit to play against the Oregon State Beavers – especially Rising. Watch for any changes in the spread.

LSU (3-1) at Ole Miss (3-1) Should Be Another Close Game
This could be a make-or-break game for Ole Miss. They might be on their way out of the ranked list if they lose. In their last game against Alabama, they missed a chance of an upset. They were ahead 7-3 in the first quarter but ultimately lost because of missed field goals and turnovers.

LSU took on Arkansas in Week 4 and didn’t have a great start. They gave up 31 points, showing that their defense still needs work. They required a field goal late in the game to pull off the win 34-31. Quarterback Jayden Daniels and his offense will have to play well from the start if they want to beat Ole Miss. They are favored by 2.5 points.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-1) Visit the Duke Blue Devils (4-0)
This should be an interesting matchup. Duke hasn’t gone 4-0 since 2018, and this year, they’ve already won against a ranked team. They beat Clemson in Week 1 when the Tigers were ranked No. 9. They’ve since dropped out of ranking, but that still counts, right? Duke dominates their opponents, averaging 200 rushing yards and 28.5 points per game.

Notre Dame also has four wins, but they lost last week to Ohio State in a close one (14-17). The Fighting Irish were plagued by missed field goals and dropped interceptions. They were only able to convert 50% of their third downs. But they kept it close against the Buckeyes, who were moved up from No. 6 to No. 4. Depending on your viewpoint, Notre Dame is either losing its momentum or they played well against a stronger opponent. This has the potential of being a low-scoring game, so I don’t think the Fighting Irish will cover the 5-point spread.
