NFL Football Week 2 2023 Preview

NFL Football Week 2 2023 Preview. Week 1 is in the bag with plenty of surprises, not the least of which was Monday night’s game between the Bills and the Jets. Aaron Rodgers’ debut was only four snaps. With a season-ending injury, you would think the Jets would be done for the night, but their defense kept Josh Allen in check, causing him to throw three picks – all to Jordan Whitehead. That gave replacement quarterback Zach Wilson time to find his footing.

The game went into overtime, where the Bills punted on a 3-and-out to start. Undrafted free agent Xavier Gipson ran it back for a walk-off return touchdown. But let’s look at the odds for Week 2. Will it be as unpredictable as Week 1?

The New and Improved Detroit Lions Take on Seattle Seahawks

The Lions will have their home opener against Seattle on Sunday to what will be an absolutely over-the-top enthusiastic crowd. Can you blame them? Their Lions took out the reigning Super Bowl champs on the road.

Seattle lost their home opener to the Rams 30-13. They were shut out in the second half and may have lost WR Taylor Lockett, who was evaluated for a concussion. They might also lose both starting tackles on the offensive line for Week 2 due to injury. The Seahawks might have trouble with the Lions’ passing game, which could be explosive against a questionable Seattle defense against the pass.

The Chiefs are mostly a passing team that was missing its primary receiver, but the Seahawks are more two-dimensional on offense and have running back Kenneth Walker as an offensive force. The Lions appear to be on a roll that started at the end of last season. I wouldn’t bet against them just yet. They are 5.5-point favorites.

You Can’t Keep a Good Chief Down

Kansas City may have lost their first game of the season, 21-20, against the Lions, but this team is too stacked and experienced to be kept down for long. They were missing tight end Travis Kelce because of a knee injury, but he’s still questionable for Week 2. Defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was ready to sit out half the season because of a contract dispute, has signed a one-year contract filled with incentives.

They visit the Jaguars and are 3-point favorites, which they should have no problem covering. Watch that line as Jones’ contract signing and Kelce’s knee status could affect it.

The (New) New York Jets visit the Dallas Cowboys

It looks like we have to wait another year to see what kind of team the Jets would be with Aaron Rodgers under center. They did well with backup Zack Wilson taking control after a shaky start. The Cowboys did much better by blanking the other New York team 40-0. The Jets should offer a more formidable challenge to the Cowboys but probably won’t be able to pull off a dramatic win as they did on Monday.

Look to the Cowboys to win by at least nine points.

The 49ers Have a Quarterback

Concerns that Brock Purdy would return to being Mr. Irrelevant have been thrown aside as he led the 49ers to a 30-7 win over the Steelers in Week 1. The Los Angeles Rams also won in Week 1, overpowering the Seahawks 30-13.

Both teams have potent offenses, but the Rams will have to contend with a defense that was the top unit in the NFL last season. Eight points favor the 49ers, but I don’t doubt they’ll be able to cover that.

Bills, Bengals, and Browns – Oh My!

Buffalo was surprised by a Jets team without Rodgers, but that won’t happen again. They’ll be ready when the Raiders come to town and are 9.5 favorites.

The Bengals were also shocked in Week 1 when the Browns throttled them 24-3. Cincinnati has invested heavily in the offense but seemed to forget about protection. Joe Burrow was only sacked twice, but he had enough pressure on him to make him ineffective. They are 3.5-point favorites to down the Ravens this week.

The improved Browns take on the Steelers in Pittsburgh and plan on winning whether the conditions are bad or not. Expect the Browns to win by more than the projected 2 points.
