Head Coach Josh McDaniels Had a Rocky 2022
The preseason has started well. They’re 2-0, with rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell making impressive plays. He was drafted in the fourth round, 135th overall. But the Raiders won all three preseason games last year, and that didn’t transition to the regular season.
Critics aren’t enamored with coach McDaniels. Quarterback Derek Carr’s performance went downhill once McDaniels started as head coach last season.
Of their 11 losses in 2022, nine were by one possession. They lost five games that they were ahead by double-digits in the second half. That’s an NFL record they do not want to be known for. Until he was benched after their Week 16 loss to the Steelers, Carr had the longest active starting streak for the same team by a quarterback (91).
Can Garoppolo Stay Healthy and Save the Season?
The first worry was that Garoppolo was reported to have failed his Raiders physical with a foot problem. But seeing him perform in the preseason game against the Rams alleviated any worry about his health status. He led the offense on a long touchdown drive to kick off the game. It was an excellent strategy to show the fans that he is in top form and ready to lead the team this season – as long as he can stay healthy.
But letting rookie O’Connell start the first pre-season game showed fans that they have a viable alternative if Garoppolo does get injured.
Improving the Arsenal for Garoppolo
The offense was the team’s strength last year, but there was plenty of room for improvement. The two standouts were running back Josh Jacobs and wide receiver Davante Adams. Jacobs is a holdout and hasn’t signed yet, but all reports are that he will get signed soon.
They did sign wide receiver Jakobi Meyers as a free agent, and he’s dominating in training camp. Fellow wide receiver Tre Tucker, who was picked in the third round, also has an outstanding training camp. His speed provides options for punt returns.
The Defense Must Improve
Last season, the Raiders were tied for the fewest interceptions (six) and allowed a 98.8 passer rating, which was last in the NFL. They created the fewest turnovers in the NFL and were 28th in yards allowed. The Raiders gave up 30 or more points in five games and allowed 500 or more yards in two games.
They picked defensive end Tyree Wilson seventh overall in the draft to turn things around. The Raiders drafted Jakorian Bennett in the fourth round to improve their cornerback issues. He is showing promise in training camp.
Safety Tre’von Moehrig had a strong rookie season in 2021, but struggled trying to adjust to a new system in 2022. He might have finally figured out the system, as reports are that he’s been dominating at camp.
They also signed linebacker Robert Spillane, safety Marcus Epps, and cornerback Brandon Facyson.
Las Vegas Sports Betting Predictions
Was Carr the reason for Las Vegas’ decline last season? This season, the Raiders bet on McDaniels. It will be interesting to see how the Raiders do without Carr and how the Saints do with him.
