Responsible Gaming Habits

For many sports fans, placing bets is part of the fun. It adds to the anticipation of the game even days before it starts. But it’s all too easy to get caught up in the emotional roller coaster of gambling, so here are some tips and pointers to help you get the most out of each game without sacrificing your finances and fun.

Understand the Game and the Bets

Unless you’re a psychic, you don’t want to gamble your money on a feeling. Learn the game and get in the habit of researching the stats and injuries of the teams before the game. Then, you can go with your gut feeling because it’s based on the knowledge you’ve acquired.

Similarly, don’t place bets that you don’t understand. Learn the different types of bets that you find enjoyable so that you can play it smart.

Don’t Borrow Money to Bet

That’s more of a rule than a habit, but you should never go against it because if you break it once, you’ll find an excuse to break it again. Owing money on your gambling will take the fun out of it and eventually add stress to your life that sports betting was supposed to get rid of.

Set a Betting Budget

Betting on sports may simply be a wager here and there, but if you gamble regularly on games, set up a weekly or monthly budget. That way, you can call it a bankroll, which is much cooler. It must be an amount you can lose without it being a problem.

Keep your wagers to a minimum – no more than 10% of your bankroll. Don’t go “all in” or place big bets. Swinging for the fences is often an act of desperation and can be the fastest way to run out of money quickly. Keep the individual bets low so you can place them more often and spread out the enjoyment.

Bet Using Logic and Research, Not Emotion

We all want our favorite team to win, but it doesn’t happen as often as we’d like. Do some research and have an open mind with the information you’re taking in. Don’t disregard input that doesn’t agree with your emotions. And don’t just take a friend’s recommendation without researching it first.

A friend of mine always bets against his favorite team. If they win, he doesn’t mind losing the money. If they lose, at least he gets some money out of it.

Make Sure You’re Having Fun

If betting is getting stressful or upsetting, you’re doing it wrong. Unless you’re a professional gambler who spends his day researching and using paid-for services, you aren’t going to make a living doing this, so keep it enjoyable. It’s supposed to add to your sports entertainment. If you have a friend who also gambles, make a pact with them that you’ll watch over each other and look for any signs of a gambling problem.

Limit Your Gambling Time

Everything in moderation, right? If you spend too much time betting and watching sports, you could miss out on other important parts of life like family and friends. If it goes further than that and you’re missing work, you’re in the danger zone. Take a break from it whenever you can.

Keep a Record

You might be thinking, “Why would I keep a record of my bets?” It doesn’t make sense if you hardly bet, but if you regularly gamble, you should know how much you spend. Is the amount increasing over time? Are you going over your budget? Are the dollar amounts of each bet staying relatively the same? The easiest way to keep your gambling in check is to keep an honest record. There are lots of apps for that or just use a spreadsheet.
