Hurts Continues to Improve
Jalen Hurts has shown a steady improvement going all the way back to high school. Last season, he passed for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He had a 66.5 completion percentage and a passer rating of 101.5. Hurts totaled 760 rushing yards with 13 touchdowns. He took his team to the Super Bowl last year and was just shy of winning it.
Has he hit his ceiling? Head coach Nick Sirianni doesn’t think so. He says that Hurts just keeps getting better each year. Not bad for a second-round draft pick. According to Sirianni, Hurts improved over the offseason, particularly in his accuracy and decision-making.
At 24 years old, Hurts has lots of time to keep improving, but if they want to keep him healthy, they might want to decrease the amount of running he does. He ran for 760 yards in 2022.
The Eagles have an equally good ground and air game. However, their running game scored a league-leading 32 touchdowns and averaged 147.6 yards per game. That’s the fifth most in the NFL. They were first in rushing yards in 2021, so they should be able to stay in the top five this season, especially with an elite offensive line and a great running quarterback.
They brought in D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny to pair with Kenneth Gainwell in the backfield to replace Miles Sanders.
Wide receiver AJ Brown averaged 17 yards per reception in his first year with the Eagles. And wideout DeVonta Smith had 1.98 yards per route. They could be the top wide receiver duo in the NFL.
Can Defense Maintain Their Pass Rushing Level?
In 2022, the Eagles led the league with 70 sacks. Four of their defensive linemen, Haason Reddick, Javon Hargrave, Josh Sweat, and Brandon Graham, all had ten or more sacks. That’s unheard of.
They did well in the offseason, replacing those players lost in free agency and bringing in top players in the draft. But there is one change that may cause them problems. Both of their offensive and defensive coordinators moved on. Shane Steichen is a big part of the team’s success and bringing out the best in Hurts. He is replaced by Brian Johnson, who was the team’s quarterback coach.
Dean Desai is replacing Jonathan Gannon as the defensive coordinator. There were a lot of changes in the defense this offseason, but luckily, Desai and Gannon both use the Fangio-based scheme, so the defense should stay the same or, hopefully, better. Desai was the defensive coordinator for the Bears in 2021. Their defense didn’t do that well, but he’ll have a much better caliber of players to work with in Philadelphia.
Sports Betting Predictions for Philadelphia
The New England Patriots in 2017-18 were the last team to return to the Super Bowl after losing it the previous year. Before that, it was the Buffalo Bills in 1990-91. The Eagles may be upset they didn’t win last season, but the team has stayed relatively intact, which bodes well for this season. They are still favored to win the NFC.
