The SEC Powerhouse
As usual, the Southeastern Conference is expected to send a large number of teams to the March Madness tournament. Last year, they had eight teams in the tournament. Some of the names being bounced around this year are Tennessee Volunteers, Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Kentucky Wildcats. However, Kentucky has been struggling recently, as they’ve lost three of their last four games.
Odds to Win the SEC Championship
Teams have roughly seven games left in the season, at which point they start the Conference’s postseason basketball tournament to decide the winner and who will earn an automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. SEC’s will be held at the Bridgeport Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, from March 13 to 17. The top five contenders and their odds are:

The favorite is the Auburn Tigers, but close behind are Tennessee and Alabama. Any one of those three can finish the season at the top. South Carolina is far behind, but their odds shortened recently from +9000. No wonder. They’re on a seven-game winning streak. They seem to be the best-kept secret of the SEC this year. It’s quite possible that they’ll sneak into the top three.
Auburn Tigers
They lost two of their top four scorers from last year but still have forward Johni Broome and newcomer guard Aden Holloway. The 6′ 10″ Broome averaged 14.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 26.5 minutes per game last season. He’s one of the reasons the Tigers will make the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year.
But head coach Bruce Pearl deserves credit for bringing this team to competitor status, advancing in four of the last five NCAA Tournaments, and making it to the Final Four in 2019 for the first time in school history.
Tennessee Volunteers
The Vols have a difficult back-to-back road schedule against Texas A&M and Arkansas before their even tougher four-game stretch to end the season, playing Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, and Kentucky. If they’re successful through that stretch, they’ll do well in the NCAA Tournament even if they don’t win the SEC.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Although the Tide lost five of their top six scorers from last year, coach Nate Oats has done an excellent job of replacing them with transfers Grant Nelson (North Dakota State) and Aaron Estrada (Hofstra). They won the SEC title in two of the last three seasons and are currently tied for first place. You might want to think twice about betting against Nelson.
South Carolina Gamecocks
The Gamecocks were a mess in coach Lamont Paris’ first year of coaching. They were 4-14 in the SEC. Perhaps that’s why the sportsbooks aren’t showing them any respect despite their greatly improved record. They’re quietly playing some of the best basketball in the country, and their odds moved from +13000 in mid-January to +1200 now.
Kentucky Wildcats
Coach John Calipari is under the microscope as his team has not made a Sweet Sixteen since 2019 or a Final Four since 2015. That’s a span of eight years. Calipari directed the team to four Final Fours in his first six seasons with Kentucky. He never went eight seasons without making a Final Four when he was with UMass or Memphis, which is why he’s having the added pressure.
But this year, he has the highest-rated recruit, freshman forward, Justin Edwards. Edwards has the rare combination of length, athleticism, and ball skills to help guide the Wildcats to another tournament entry. DJ Wagner and Robert Dillingham are two other Wildcats vying for the Freshman of the Year award. Unfortunately, their odds of becoming SEC Champs slid from +500 to a +5000 long shot.
