More and more players are betting on unique, once a year events. In 2020, the NFL Draft betting handle exceeded $50 million. The handle on the draft was likely much more because so many bets went uncounted. See below for why you should offer wagering options on the NFL Draft.
On Thursday, April 29, the National Football League kicks off the unofficial start to the new season. Officially, the season started in March.
But most football fans don’t pay attention to pro football until the NFL Draft. Draft prognosticators like Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have built careers from predicting which teams will draft which players.
This year, the NFL Draft is all about quarterbacks. That should make the event one of the more unique in recent years. Whenever a draft centers around the most critical position on the field, you can be sure interest will be high.
Although the world worked its way through the pandemic last year, doing so didn’t affect betting on the NFL Draft. Recorded revenue exceeded $50 million. Actual revenue was likely much higher.
As any pay per head agent will tell you, bookies that offer free sportsbook betting software don’t provide betting stats. If options provided on the 2021 event are any indication, NFL Draft betting should exceed most expectations.
Even though the first two choices are as close to set in stone as possible, what the San Francisco 49ers do with the third pick, and rumors the Atlanta Falcons are looking to move out of the fourth spot should make for an incredible first night.
San Francisco 49ers hold the key to NFL draft betting
The San Francisco 49ers hold the first-round key. Oddsmakers have made Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence around a -10000 chalk to go first to the Urban Meyer coached Jacksonville Jaguars.
After Lawrence, the odds on the New York Jets drafting BYU gunslinger Zach Wilson are at -5000. But after Lawrence and Wilson, odds fall dramatically on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones to go third.
49ers’ coach Kyle Shanahan said five quarterbacks had enamored him: Lawrence, Wilson, and Jones, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. Shanahan knows the chances of landing Lawrence or Wilson are slim.
Fields, Lance, and Jones, should be available. So what the San Francisco 49ers do with the third pick could determine what happens in the rest of Round 1.
Falcons willing to trade Julio Jones and want out of position four
Atlanta GM Terry Fontenot said he’s willing to listen to offers for one of the best wide receivers in the past decade, Julio Jones. The Falcons are rebuilding, so gaining as many picks as possible appears to be the goal.
In addition to parting with Jones, Fontenot said he’s willing to trade down from pick four. Depending on who San Francisco chooses with the third choice, Atlanta’s fourth pick could be prime real estate.
If the 49ers go with Justin Fields, teams may scramble to move up to fourth to draft Mac Jones. If the 49ers tell Goodell to call the Alabama quarterback’s name, franchises captivated by Fields, like the Carolina Panthers, could try and package a deal for the Ohio State quarterback.
If no moves happen, many feel the Falcons draft Florida tight-end Kyle Pitts. The junior Gator received the highest-grade Kiper ever awarded to a tight-end.
NFL Draft betting players call bookie agents looking for the best odds. No doubt, many have asked for odds on Pitts to go fourth to the Falcons.
Some teams attracting Super Bowl action before NFL Draft betting
The San Francisco 49ers had a terrible 2020. But because they got aggressive and moved to third in Round 1, their odds to win Super Bowl 56 have taken a hit.
San Francisco has become a top-six choice to lift the Lombardi Trophy next season. The odds depreciation is dramatic. Bookie software agents should be aware of large championship bets on teams like the Niners.
Set max betting limits on Super Bowl futures. If teams like San Francisco, Atlanta, and the New England Patriots make the right moves on Thursday and Friday, enormous bets like the one that drove down the 49ers’ odds from 30-to-1 to the sixth choice can happen fast.
