NFL Draft 2024 Preview

NFL Draft 2024 starts this week, but the teams have been planning for months to determine which positions are best filled compared to the available talent coming out of the colleges.

NFL Draft 2024 Preview

This is where the teams that didn’t make the playoffs have a chance to shorten the gap between them and the top franchises. Chicago will get the first pick overall, and the consensus is that they will choose Quarterback Caleb Williams from USC.

Caleb Williams QB – Junior – USC

Williams can potentially alter Chicago’s future if he transitions to professional football with all his talent in tow. He brings many positive attributes to the position, including being a natural thrower with accuracy and speed. Williams can throw from a number of positions on his feet and angles of his arm. He’s also a talented runner, eluding defenders or just running through them.

But last year at USC, he focused on the bigger plays instead of using checkdowns when the play called for them. Moving to the NFL should cure him of that.

Jayden Daniels QB – Senior – LSU

Daniels won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 and set the single-season FBS record for passing efficiency (208). That year, he threw 40 touchdowns with only four interceptions and ran for another 10 touchdowns. He’s the only player in FBS history to pass for 12,000 yards and rush for 3,000 yards in a career.

His ceiling is still high, but his floor moved up in the second half of last season thanks to his explosive running style and improvement in playing in the pocket. He’s tall and lean but doesn’t shy away from contact. His accuracy, decision-making, and speed are exceptional, and he’s comfortable in the pocket. The Washington Commanders are expected to grab him as the #2 overall pick, but I wonder if he’ll be grabbed before Williams.

Drake Maye QB – Sophomore – North Carolina

He has quick feet and hands and can throw without much foot space in the pocket. Maye is tough to tackle in the pocket due to his athletic ability to create with his legs.

In two seasons as North Carolina’s quarterback, Maye threw over 8,000 yards. He broke the school’s record for passing yards in one season (4,321) and tied the record for passing touchdowns (38). Last year, he didn’t have the pass protection he needed, which sometimes caused him to make poor decisions. But those and other problems can be worked on with the right coaching.

I can see him going in the third pick, which is the Patriots.

J.J. McCarthy QB – Junior – Michigan

Michigan’s running game was so good that McCarthy didn’t have to throw the ball as often as most quarterbacks. He also showed his running abilities when needed. When throwing, McCarthy can target tight windows and works well in the pocket. He could end up with the New York Giants, who have the fourth pick.

Marvin Harrison Jr. WR – Junior – Ohio State

He is the only two-time All-American wide receiver in Ohio State history and the only one with multiple 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

Harrison has power and speed, meaning he can get physical or explode off the line or away from a defender. When the ball is in the air, he can put it into high gear and catch it anywhere in the field. The Los Angeles Chargers should tap him for the fifth pick overall.

Lantau Latu OLB – UCLA

Because Latu had spinal fusion surgery when he was at Washington and was told to never play football again, it’s impressive that he’s ranked so high on the Draft prospects. But that’s how good his stats are. He’s had no issues in the last two years while compiling 23 sacks and winning the Lombardi and Ted Hendricks awards in 2023. He is the leader in tackles for loss (21.5) in the nation while tied for third in sacks (13). He only missed one game where he didn’t get at least one sack last season. Will he get picked up in the first round, or will the teams be cautious?
