Argentina vs Algeria Game Analysis: Reigning Champs
The reigning champions will take on Algeria on June 16 at 9 pm EST at Kansas City Stadium to begin the defense of their world title. That’s only happened twice before in the World Cup. Italy did it in 1938 and Brazil in 1962.
The FIFA World Cup won’t be decided in the first game, but getting this win can set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
Argentina retains the core group that won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and later captured Copa América. They combine experience and youth and have no key players missing in the opener. Along with Lionel Messi, their key players are Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, Nico Paz, Enzo Fernández, and Giuliano Simeone.
Algeria’s attackers can frustrate the best defenses. Their top players include Amine Gouiri, creative talent Ibrahim Maza, Anis Hadj Moussa, and veteran captain Riyad Mahrez, who is always a threat on the counter-attack.
Argentina Recent Scores: Clean Sheets
They lost their first game of the 2022 campaign to Saudi Arabia, and will do their best not to repeat that this year.
Widely considered the greatest player of all time, Lionel Messi continues to play at a high level, scoring 43 goals with Inter Miami last season.
They had a strong qualifying campaign, winning their last seven matches and scoring 21 goals in that period while conceding only one.
Warm-up matches: Argentina beat Honduras 2-0, before defeating Iceland 3-0.

Algeria Recent Scores: Long Wait
This is Algeria’s first trip to the World Cup since 2014. During their qualifying campaign, Algeria scored 24 goals, the second-highest total of any African nation, only behind Côte d’Ivoire. They won eight of 10 matches and conceded only eight goals.
In the warm-up matches, Algeria first defeated the Netherlands 1-0, then beat Bolivia 4-0. They are currently on a four-match unbeaten streak.
Argentina vs Algeria History: First Competitive
Surprisingly, these two teams have only met once before, and it was an international friendly. They competed on June 5, 2007, at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain. Messi scored twice in his first international brace. It was a high-scoring, entertaining game that Argentina won 4-3.
June 16, 2026, will be their first encounter in a competitive setting.
Argentina vs Algeria Prediction: Injury Concerns?
38-year-old Lionel Messi is returning for his sixth World Cup. This is expected to be his last one. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was sidelined for several weeks due to a hamstring injury, and only recently returned.
Even though he is confirmed as fit to play, he was only in the final warm-up match against Iceland for 20 minutes. Don’t expect him out there for the entire 90 minutes in this first match, but the team is fully stacked with midfield creativity and attacking firepower even without Messi.
Argentina has one injury as Nico Paz works through a knee injury. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is expected to start with a fractured ring finger, and Nicolas Tagliafico is working through a muscle tear in the back of his leg. Our Argentina vs Algeria prediction is a tough match for Argentina, but they will ultimately prevail 2-1.
