France vs Senegal Game Analysis: Power Gap
It’s been a long time since these two teams last met in the FIFA World Cup in 2002. Senegal caused an upset then. Now, they are a physical, defensive organization that can counterattack with players like Mané and Jackson. But the talent gap between these two teams is too great to see another upset.
Kickoff will be June 16 at 3 pm EST at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
France Recent Scores: Try Again
This is France’s 17th World Cup appearance, and its eighth consecutive appearance. They are two-time champions, most recently in 2018, and just missed winning in 2022 against Argentina in Qatar, where Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick. He was only the second player to do so in a World Cup final. Geoff Hurst did it first in 1966.
The game ended as a 3-3 draw, with Argentina winning in the ensuing penalty shoot-out 4-2.
During the warm-up phase of this World Cup, France lost 1-2 to Côte d’Ivoire in their first warm-up match, but defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 in the second.

Senegal Recent Scores: Fourth Appearance
This is Senegal’s fourth World Cup:
- 2002 – quarter-final
- 2018 – group stage
- 2022 – round of 16
Senegal did not do well in their two warm-up games, as they ended up losing to the USA 2-3 and drawing against Saudi Arabia 0-0.
France vs Senegal History: Debut Upset
These countries have met only once before, over twenty years ago, when Senegal made its World Cup debut. France were the reigning world and European champions. It was the first game of the 2002 World Cup.
Over the course of the game, France had possession 65% of the time, getting 24 shots compared to Senegal’s 5. But it was Senegal that emerged the victor after 90 minutes, 1-0. That’s the only time they managed a clean sheet in 12 World Cup matches.
On the surface, it seemed like a crazy upset, but there were signs. Two of France’s top players had to miss the match, one of them suffering an injury in a pre-tournament friendly.
Even though it was Senegal’s debut, twenty-one of their 23-man roster played football in France. The only goal of the game was scored by Papa Bouba Diop halfway through the first half. France relentlessly pressed Senegal for the rest of the game. It seemed like only a matter of time before France would score, but they never did.
France vs Senegal Prediction: All France as the Winner
Both teams have strong scorers. France has 2022 Golden Boot award winner Kylian Mbappé, 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, and reigning Bundesliga Player of the Season, Michael Olise. The team has scored multiple goals in nine of their last 10 matches.
Senegal also has dangerous forwards, including Sadio Mané, Ismaïla Sarr, and Iliman Ndiaye, who’ve contributed to their teams’ scoring multiple goals in eight of their last nine matches.
Mbappé has scored in six of his last six games. It’s doubtful Senegal will keep a clean sheet in this match as France will want to make up for the previous upset. Although Senegal can score, our France vs Senegal prediction is 2-0 for a France victory.
