Why is England vs Argentina a historic semi-final?
England meets Argentina for the second semi-final. They play in Atlanta on July 15 at 3 pm local time.
No side has won the title in successive tournaments since Brazil did it 60 years ago, but Argentina is still in the running to make that happen this year. However, they haven’t faced a top team in this tournament, and yet they’ve struggled in all three knockout matches.
England is hoping to reach their first FIFA World Cup final since 1966.
How did England perform in the knockout rounds?
England had an amazing opening game against Croatia, but floundered in the remaining Group L matches. They’ve woken up in the knockout round and have scored five goals against Mexico and Norway.
June 17: England 4 – 2 Croatia (Group play)
June 23: England 0 – 0 Ghana (Group play)
June 27: Panama 0 – 2 England (Group play)
July 1: England 2 – 1 Congo DR (Round of 32)
July 5: Mexico 2 – 3 England (Round of 16)
July 11: Norway 1 – 2 England (Quarter-final)
How did Argentina struggle in the knockout stage despite winning?
Argentina have won every match in the tournament so far. They did well in the group stage but have had difficulties in the knockout round:
June 16: Argentina 3 – 0 Algeria (Group play)
June 22: Argentina 2 – 0 Austria (Group play)
June 27: Jordan 1 – 3 Argentina (Group play)
July 3: Argentina 3 – 2 Cabo Verde (Round of 32)
July 7: Argentina 3 – 2 Egypt (Round of 16)
July 11: Argentina 3 – 1 Switzerland (Quarter final)
What is the historical record between England and Argentina?
These teams have not met very often, but unlike most football rivalries, this one has had several dramatic World Cup encounters:
- England wins: 6
- Draws: 5 (one decided by penalties in Argentina’s favor)
- Argentina wins: 3
1966 World Cup
- (England wins in group and quarter-final en route to their only title)
1986 World Cup Quarter-final
- Argentina 2 – 1 England (Maradona’s “Goal of the Century”)
1998 World Cup Round of 16
- Argentina 2 – 2 England (Argentina won on penalties)
2002 World Cup Group Stage
- England 1 – 0 Argentina (David Beckham penalty)
The teams have met twice more since their 2002 World Cup fixture, with England winning both times.

What is the prediction for England vs Argentina in the 2026 World Cup?
England has been the better defensive side in the past few years. In this tournament alone, Argentina has conceded to Jordan and Switzerland, twice to Cabo Verde and twice to Egypt. They’re still in this tournament because they’re the highest-scoring side.
Both teams are probably battling fatigue as England had a huge battle against Mexico and then had to deal with the Miami heat and humidity to win against Norway, and they went into extra time to do it.
Argentina needed extra time to make a frantic comeback against Egypt after trailing 2-0, and then required an additional 30 minutes to beat Switzerland 3-1.
Argentina are slight favorites because of their recent accomplishments, but England has shown that they deserve to be here. Their stars like Bellingham, Kane, Saka and Rice easily counter Argentina’s top players: Messi, Lautaro Martinez and Mac Allister.
Given what we’ve seen between France and Spain on Tuesday (Spain winning 2-0), it’s quite possible England will also overcome expectations.
Our England vs Argentina prediction is a surprising 4-2 win for England. One thing’s for sure, there won’t be any shortage of drama.
