Scottie Scheffler
Scheffler basically owns 2024. So the question is, do you want to bet on the boring, sure things or go after the great deals that could give you a big payday? The No. 1 golfer is coming off his second Masters win and is well-suited for the lengthy course with his long, straight shots.
His Achilles heel may be the upcoming birth of his first child. As any parent knows, it’s a wonderful moment but a major distraction and cause for exhaustion. Bookies take note, as the timing of the birth could altar his odds considerably.
Jon Rahm
For a player with the shortest odds to win, next to Scottie Scheffler, there’s not much to say about Jon Rahm except that he was the No. 1 player just before he moved to the LIV. He was the defending champ of the PGA Championship last year but didn’t perform well then. He has played well since but has not dominated.
Rory McIlroy
McIlroy has not had a major win since 2014, but somehow, he is a sentimental favorite at 10-1 odds. He has had some near misses lately, which could make people think that he’s on a comeback. Hopefully, that’s true. The naturally talented golfer may have problems or issues with his drives, but his biggest challenge may well be overcoming a lack of confidence, as he should have a number of major wins by now.
Ludvig Adberg
His first major championship start was this year’s Masters. He was tied for first place going into the back nine. Adberg came in second and was T-10 at the RBC Heritage the week after. Although he’s playing better than expected with his lack of experience, his odds shouldn’t be this short. Watch for movement as the PGA Championship gets closer.
Brooks Koepka
The defending champ is going after his fourth Wannamaker Trophy. If he wins, he’ll only be the second person to win back to back PGA Championships twice. The only other person to do that is Tiger Woods.
Brooks Koepka boasts five major tournament wins, three of them coming in 2023. However, the recent form has been a cause for concern. Koepka has failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments. This slump is reflected in his finishes: 64th at last year’s Open Championship and 45th at this year’s Masters. Koepka has a reputation for rising to the occasion in major events, but that reputation won’t hold up much longer without a strong showing later this month.
Collin Morikawa
At 22-1, Morikawa could be the best value of the group. He’s been playing exceptionally well lately, finishing third in the Masters and ninth at the RBC Heritage. He’s currently ranked No. 13 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He won the PGA Championship in 2020 in his first appearance. Only eight others have won their first time making the cut since the Championship started in 1916.
Bookies, keep your limits in for Morikawa. He has the potential to sneak up on Scheffler.
Tiger Woods
Although Woods’ odds are a longshot 125-1, he is mentioned here because he’ll make the cut for a record 24th time in a row at the PGA Championship. He is a four-time PGA winner and indicated that he hopes to compete in the three remaining majors this year.
