Key Factors in the 49ers vs. Eagles Matchup
These teams have met only twice in the Wild Card round, most recently in 1996, when San
Francisco came out on top. Their most recent postseason encounter, however, came in the
2023 NFC Championship Game, a night 49ers fans would rather forget. San Francisco was
forced to play with its third-string quarterback, and Philadelphia capitalized, cruising to a 31–7
win. This time, the Eagles are hoping to repeat history, while the Niners are looking to close that
chapter for good.
Philadelphia finished the regular season 11–6, opening the year with statement wins over the
Cowboys, Chiefs, Rams, and Buccaneers, which briefly positioned them as the league’s most
complete team. A couple of midseason stumbles slowed their momentum. Still, the Eagles
regrouped and closed the year with a familiar pattern of inconsistency—mixing losses with
strong winning stretches that kept them firmly in the playoff picture.
On the other hand, the 49ers surprisingly struggled from the very beginning, with many injuries
to their starting lineup, forcing them to find alternative players and ways to win. The absence of
players like Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and Trent
Williams at various points made consistency difficult, yet the 49ers still finished 12–5. That
record was good enough for second place in the NFC West and left them just one win short of
securing the conference’s top seed, an impressive result given the circumstances.
Philadelphia’s Season at a Glance
Last season, the Eagles looked unstoppable on their way to a Super Bowl title, with Saquon
Barkley’s historic production often credited as the engine of that run. His numbers did fall off this
year, and so did Philadelphia’s overall offensive efficiency. Barkley’s output has been relatively
steady in wins and losses, with no meaningful performance gap, while Jalen Hurts shows a
stark split: elite efficiency, zero interceptions, and heavy touchdown production in wins, versus
sharp drop-offs across every metric in losses. In short, the Eagles’ 2025 results track far more
closely with Hurts’ performance than with Barkley’s box score.
Who Must Deliver for the 49ers
Christian McCaffrey’s 2025 numbers look impressive at first glance, especially given how
ravaged the 49ers were by injuries. He played all 17 games, finished second in the league in
scrimmage yards, caught more passes than nearly every non-wide receiver, and scored 17 total
touchdowns. But calling it his best season as a 49er ignores both context and efficiency. His 3.9
yards per carry ranked near the middle of the league, San Francisco’s run game was largely
average, and his early-down impact fell sharply compared to 2023, when he was far more
explosive and decisive. This year, McCaffrey was invaluable as a volume runner and matchup
problem in the passing game, but he wasn’t the early-down game-changer who powered the
49ers’ Super Bowl run just two seasons ago.
Final Score Prediction: 49ers vs. Eagles
Even though the 49ers finished with a better regular-season record, this game being played in
Philadelphia matters. The Eagles earned home-field advantage, and San Francisco has
struggled at times away from Levi’s Stadium. That edge, combined with the Eagles’ ability to
rise in big moments, could be enough to tilt this matchup in their favor.
Our prediction at PayPerHead:
49ers 24–31 Eagles
