As NFL teams prepare for another football season, I thought we could examine a few of the more interesting storylines that fans are focusing on in the offseason.
The New York Jets
It’s been almost a year since Aaron Rodgers went down from an injured Achilles tendon. The starting five up front weren’t together until the start of that game. Rodgers’ injury shows how dangerous it can be not to have any chemistry going into a game when your job is to protect the most critical player.
They won’t make that mistake again. The Jets have been carefully putting together a team around the quarterback and are now waiting for Rodgers to be placed in the middle and go. But with a full year off after an injury at the age of 40, will he still have the moves he’s known for, which earned him his four MVP awards? Be prepared for lots of bets being placed on him and his first few games.
Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers
Love had a shaky start in his first season as a rookie, replacing veteran Aaron Rodgers. But for the last eight games of the regular season, he proved to be a top quarterback with 18 touchdowns, one interception, and a 70% completion rate. He even got the Packers past the first weekend of the playoffs.
Green Bay is betting that the last stretch of the season wasn’t a fluke and wants to give Love a huge pay raise with an extension to his contract. Most of the starters are coming back this season, which is good for consistency and chemistry. But running back Aaron Jones will be replaced by Josh Jacobs.
Atlanta Falcons With Kirk Cousins
Cousins played at a Pro Bowl level before his Achilles injury in October with the Vikings. The 35-year-old was in his twelfth season in the NFL, and this was his first significant injury. He was tied with the NFL lead of 18 touchdown passes and had thrown for 2,331 yards and five interceptions – the best in the NFC.
That was also the last year of his contract with Minnesota. Now that he’s with the Falcons, who are in an easier division, will his level of play be enough for Atlanta to pass the Buccaneers for the lead in the NFC South? They haven’t had a winning season since 2017. Worst case, they have rookie Michael Penix Jr. on the sidelines, but don’t we all want to see what Cousins can do with the Falcons?
49ers and Chiefs in Super Bowl
Most people assume the Chiefs will make it to the Super Bowl again this year as they attempt a historical three-peat, but who will be their challenger? Will it be a remake of last year’s Super Bowl with the 49ers?
Although San Francisco appears to be the top NFC team, a few other teams could overtake them, including Detroit, Philadelphia, or possibly Green Bay. Let’s not forget that a few AFC challengers hope to stop the Chiefs a little sooner than the championship game, including Baltimore, Buffalo, and maybe even Cincinnati, if Joe Burrow can stay healthy.
C.J. Stroud
The Texans have done their part in establishing an effective offensive unit for Stroud. So now we wait to see if their quarterback will continue to impress in his second year or if he’ll drop into a sophomore slump. He has receivers Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Stefon Diggs, and running back Joe Mixon to work with, so there’s no excuse for a lousy season. Keep your limits in, just in case.
Jim Harbaugh Reviving the Chargers
After eight years as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Harbaugh returns to the NFL as the LA Chargers head coach. He brought Michigan to four Division titles during his time there and one national finalist last year.
Before Michigan, he was the head coach of the 49ers for three years and raised them to Conference champions in 2012, his second season with them. He could be the missing piece of the puzzle for the Chargers, who have a great quarterback in Justin Herbert but a struggling defense and have lost a couple of good receivers in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Harbaugh might not turn this team around in year 1, but I bet he’ll worry the other teams in the AFC West.
