This matchup will ultimately decide who takes the division, but the outcome doesn’t depend solely on what happens in Tampa Bay vs. Carolina.
If the Buccaneers beat the Panthers and the Saints defeat the Falcons, Tampa Bay clinches the
NFC South and the final NFC playoff berth. However, things get complicated if Atlanta wins. A Falcons victory would create a three-way tie at 8–9 between the Buccaneers, Panthers, and Falcons. In that scenario, Carolina holds the tiebreaker thanks to head-to-head wins over both Tampa Bay and Atlanta, which would hand the Panthers the division title, even if the Bucs beat them in this game.
That’s why Tampa Bay’s path is narrower than it appears. Beating Carolina is necessary but not sufficient. The Buccaneers also need the Saints to take care of business against the Falcons. Otherwise, they risk missing the playoffs entirely, despite doing their part on the field.
For the Panthers, the equation is more straightforward. A win over Tampa Bay sends them to the playoffs outright. Even with a loss, they can still clinch the NFC South if Atlanta beats New Orleans, thanks to that three-way tiebreaker advantage. It would mark Carolina’s first playoff appearance since 2017, when they finished 11–5 before falling in the Wild Card round.

The Buccaneers have lost seven of their last eight games. That’s a lot. Still, if they win this one, they can be in. That’s the result of a long season filled with mixed performances that allow for these kinds of late scenarios.
Their last win came against the Cardinals (20-17). The rest of their recent losses were against the Dolphins (20-17), Panthers (23-20), Falcons (29-28), Saints (24-20), Rams (34-7), and Bills (44-32).

The Panthers had an opportunity to clinch their postseason spot with a win over the Seattle Seahawks, especially after the Bucs lost to the Dolphins. However, Seattle kept its momentum and defeated Carolina 27-10, setting up this Week 18 winner-take-all matchup.
In their last five games, the Panthers have lost three—against the Saints (20-17), 49ers (20-9), and Seahawks (27-10). Their two wins came against the Rams (31-28) and, conveniently, the Buccaneers (23-20).
Buccaneers vs. Panthers Pick and Prediction
This won’t just be the final regular-season game for both teams, but also their last chance to reach the Wild Card round. Neither team enters with strong momentum or consistency, which makes this matchup difficult to predict. Everything points to a game that needs to be followed minute by minute.
