76ers vs Celtics Game Analysis and Preview
The Celtics will host the 76ers for Game 5 on April 28. They are the better team and have the opportunity to win this game and the series at home. They have an excellent home record this season (30-11), but did experience their one loss in this series at home.
The 76ers were gelling as a team without Joel Embiid. Maybe the two-time NBA scoring champion’s return to the lineup in Game 4 disrupted their flow. Let’s see how this Game 5 looks with our 76ers vs Celtics prediction at PayPerHead.
Philadelphia 76ers Recent Scores
Philadelphia was down to the wire in their final games of the regular season because they were in a crowded area of the standings, with the Toronto Raptors ending with 46 wins and the No. 5 seed, and the Miami Heat with 43 wins and the No. 10 seed. It was an uphill battle for the 76ers, losing against the Pistons, Spurs and Rockets before beating the Pacers and Bucks to finish the season as the No. 7 seed.
Philadelphia qualified for the playoffs through the play-in tournament, beating the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic, 109-97, on April 15 to advance. Orlando beat Charlotte 121-90 to play their first round of the playoffs against the Detroit Pistons. The Magic lead the series 3-1.
Boston Celtics Recent Scores
The Celtics finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the East, with 56 wins. They only lost 2 of their last 11 games, with those losses coming against the Atlanta Hawks and New Your Knicks.
Coincidentally, they will play one of those 2 teams if they emerge victorious in this series. I wonder if that’s a bad omen.

76ers vs Celtics Playoffs History
This has been a tough series for the 76ers and Celtics
- Game 1, April 19: Celtics 123 – 91 76ers (at Boston). The big news here is that Jayson Tatum had 25 points and 11 rebounds in his first playoff game since his Achilles tendon injury last season. At one point, Boston led by 35 points, so coach Joe Mazzulla gave a total of 12 players court time. Joel Embiid was still absent from the 76ers’ lineup following an appendectomy on April 9.
- Game 2, April 21: Celtics 97 – 111 76ers (at Boston). Rookie V.J. Edgecombe had 30 points and 10 rebounds even though he was in pain from a hard fall on his back earlier in the game. He’s the first rookie to record those playoff stats since 1998.
- Game 3, April 24: Celtics 108 – 100 76ers (at Philadelphia). In the fourth quarter, the 76ers took the lead 85-84 to get the hometown crowd in the game. But it was short-lived. Tyrese Maxey scored 31 points for the 76ers. VJ Edgecombe managed only 10 points as Boston successfully hampered his game.
- Game 4, April 26: Celtics 128 – 96 76ers (at Philadelphia). Joel Embiid returned to the court after his recent appendectomy. He scored 26 points in 34 minutes, but couldn’t help the 76ers with their efficiency.
76ers vs Celtics Prediction and Final Score
With Embiid sitting out the last few weeks, it’s allowed Edgecombe and Maxey to mature as future standout 76ers. His return will be a positive addition to the lineup, but in the middle of an intense playoff series, it might be more disruptive than constructive.
The Celtics spent the season developing a successful groove, while the 76ers are still working out the kinks. Unfortunately, it’s doubtful that Philadelphia will get there in time. Our 76ers vs Celtics prediction is a 120-108 win for Boston, which will win the series.
