The 2026 March Madness tournament introduces several rules and operational updates to improve game flow, officiating accuracy, and logistics.
Gameplay & Officiating Updates
Coach’s Challenge (Men’s Tournament)
Coaches may challenge specific calls, including out-of-bounds decisions, goaltending or basket interference, and restricted-area arc rulings. A timeout is required to initiate a challenge.
Continuous Motion Rule Update
Players fouled after ending their dribble may now complete their movement toward the basket, increasing potential scoring opportunities.
Flagrant 1 for Groin Contact
Officials may assess a Flagrant 1 for accidental groin contact, rather than an automatic ejection.
Basket Interference Clarification
Using the rim or backboard to gain an advantage is now classified as basket interference instead of a technical foul.
Tournament & Seeding Updates
Tournament Size Remains at 68 Teams
Despite discussions about expansion, no additional teams were added for 2026.
Refined NET Ranking Weight
NET rankings now account for 35% of a team’s evaluation, with Strength of Record representing 25%.
Adjusted Geographic Bracketing
Travel considerations may override strict geographic placement to reduce fatigue for higher seeds.
