College Football Odds With the 12-Team Playoff Format

College Football Odds With the 12-Team Playoff Format

The current four-team playoff format has only existed since 2014, but it is about to change. As of 2024, there will be a 12-team playoff bracket. The five highest-ranked conference champions will receive automatic bids, while the remaining teams will be comprised of the next seven highest-ranked teams. Let’s look at the best college football odds with this specific format.

This expands the field greatly, giving more conferences and teams a chance to compete for the national championship. A larger audience of fans will watch and bet on their favorite teams chasing after the title once their conference championships are completed.

Ohio State Buckeyes

For the last three seasons, this team has finished with the same record (11-2) overall and (8-1) in conference play. They were set to improve on that record last season as they were up 11-0 but lost to Michigan and Missouri in their final two games. This year, they have the strongest roster in years, and it is possible to see them finally get their first national championship since 2014.

Georgia Bulldogs

This team has been consistently at the top for the last three years, winning two national titles before losing their only game last season in the SEC Championship game. They have an envious 42-2 record in three seasons. They will have the confidence to win it all this season.

Oregon Ducks

This sleeper team finally made the top three list after finishing second in the Pac-12 under Washington. That was their second season under coach Dan Lanning. They will be without quarterback Bo Nix but should do well with Dillon Gabriel, who transferred from Oklahoma.

Texas Longhorns

The Longhorns came so close to making it to the national championship last year but lost to Washington 37-31 in the Sugar Bowl. Quinn Ewers will return under center, and coach Steve Sarkisian has improved his roster from last season. The team has continued to improve under Sarkisian since he started in 2021, and you can bet it will be even better this season.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This will be coach Marcus Freeman’s third year with the team. Last season, their defense allowed the seventh fewest points while their offense scored 40-plus points nine times. That earned them a 10-3 record. The biggest wild card will be their fourth quarterback in four years—Riley Leonard from Duke.

Penn State Nittany Lions

The Lions also had one of the best offenses and defenses in the nation last year. They will keep their current quarterback, Junior Drew Allar. He has room to improve, as his completion rate was 59.7% last year. But if he continues to improve, the team has a better chance of making it to the playoff bracket.

Ole Miss Rebels

The Rebels had their best record under coach Lane Kiffin (11-2), as they’ve never won 11 games before. They even beat Penn State in the Peach Bowl. However, they are known for being unable to put together two good seasons in a row. The last time they did was in 1959-60. Kiffen has won at least ten games twice in the last three years, so maybe he’s figured out a formula to get another 10+ win season this year.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Now that hugely successful coach Nick Saban has moved onto ESPN as a College GameDay analyst, the Tide has to make do with Kalen DeBoer. But DeBoer is also successful, coming from Washington. He inherits a mostly intact roster, which had a 12-2 record. They beat Georgia and won the SEC last season. If DeBoer can keep this team on the same track, he might improve the odds of winning the national title.

Michigan Wolverines

Although the Wolverines won the championship last year, they aren’t expected to do nearly as well this season with coaching and player turnover. They have a rookie head coach and lost quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the NFL. We’re still waiting to find out who will fill that vital role under center.
