Kansas City Chiefs 2023 Preview from PayPerHead

Kansas City Chiefs 2023 Preview. Now that the 2023 NFL Draft is done and in the books, the odds for the defending Super Bowl champs are set at +600. With Mahomes steering the ship, the team is once again expected to win it all next year. Close behind them are the San Francisco 49ers at +700.

2022-2023 Kansas City Chiefs Recap

Besides winning Super Bowl LVII, arguably the biggest thing Kansas City did last year was trade Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins. It was a questionable trade but one that the Chiefs had to make as they had little cap space to play with and would have struggled to match what Miami gave him.

Mahomes brought his team to the Super Bowl in three of the last four years and then in what may have had his best year yet, in a real nail-biter, he guided his team to win Super Bowl LVII. But with the parade over, the Chiefs are back at building up the team.

The Chiefs’ first draft pick didn’t even start until number 31. Their seven picks were 31st – Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE; 55th – Rashee Rice, WR; 92nd – Wanya Morris, OT; 119th – Chamarri Conner, S; 166th – Stephen Austin, LB; 194th – Keondre Coburn, DT; and 250th – Nic Jones, CB (because a team can never have too many cornerbacks).

Kansas City Chiefs Offense Heading into the 2023 Season

The Chiefs used the draft and free-agent signings to fill some holes in their lineup. Overall, they were happy with what they accomplished in this year’s NFL Draft.

They picked seven players and continue to rebuild the wide receiver group they started last year when they picked up Skyy Moore in the second round. They also picked up Kadarius Toney at the trade deadline. This year, they picked up WR Rashee Rice in the second round. They lost Smith-Schuster and Hardman as free agents, and while these are great replacements, they aren’t proven yet.

Overall, Kansas City does not have much to worry about on their offense, especially with Mahomes at the helm. It’ll remain one of the best in the league. Their defense, however, was about average in the NFL last year.

Kansas City Chiefs Defense Heading into the 2023 Season

The Chiefs have a young defense that was short on experienced players to carry the play. They now have a season under their belts with great coaching and should show improvement in the fall. Defensive tackle Chris Jones was a top player in the lineup and should be a great mentor for the new rookies.

Kansas City had a hole in their defensive line when Khalen Saunders became a free agent and signed with the New Orleans Saints. Their sixth-round pick was Keondre Coburn, DT, drafted out of Texas. They also wanted help on their edge and drafted Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE, from Kansas State.

Edge rushers, receivers, and offensive tackles are expensive positions to buy, so it pays to pick them up during the NFL Draft, especially for teams like Kansas City that are pretty close to their cap already.

Kansas City Chiefs 2023 NFL Season Schedule

The dates have not been confirmed yet, but the following is the Chiefs’ schedule for the coming season.

  • At Denver Broncos
  • At Green Bay Packers
  • Denver Broncos
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Las Vegas Raiders

  • At Las Vegas Raiders
  • At Los Angeles Chargers
  • At Minnesota Vikings
  • At New England Patriots

The Bengals might give the Chiefs are tough time but what’s really interesting is the final matchup. The Philadelphia Eagles are at +750 odds to win the Super Bowl. Will their last game of the season be a prelude to Super Bowl LVIII? Agents should be ready with limits on those two games.
