Sure Things and Upsets

Detroit gets to be in the season’s opening game on Thursday, but they have to take on Kansas City. The Chiefs are without Chris Jones, who is holding out for a better contract, but that won’t be enough for the Lions to win. Detroit’s defense has improved, but it won’t be enough to slow down Mahomes, who’ll be able to win by at least a touchdown and make the spread.

————–

The Commanders should have no problem covering their spread (-7) against the Cardinals. Arizona didn’t win the last seven games of 2022, and now they’ve also lost their quarterback, Kyler Murray, because of a knee injury. Backup Joshua Dobbs is expected to take over, but he’s on his sixth team in seven years and has yet to win a game as a starter. This might turn into a train wreck.

————

Now that Rodgers has moved on from the Packers, Jordan Love can finally become the starting quarterback. It’s been three long years for him, during which time he saw minimal action. He has plenty of young guns around him, including the receivers he’s succeeded with.

Justin Fields has experience as the starter for the Chicago Bears but has been injury-prone and not too successful. He has several records for rushing and will have more weapons for long passes this season. But the Packers have better defense overall and should be able to beat the Bears, the two-point favorites.

————

The Ravens should have no problem winning their home opener against the Texans, and with Lamar Jackson under center, they can cover the 10-point spread. Rookie C.J. Stroud was inconsistent during the preseason, and he’ll have a difficult time against Baltimore’s defense, which should restrict his long-passing game.

———–

The Dolphins at the Chargers will be a shootout, with both teams having explosive offenses. Tua Tagovailoa will try to outlast Justin Herbert and running back star Austin Ekeler. Ultimately, it looks like the Chargers will prevail, but can they cover the spread?

—————

The Bengals are only slight favorites in their matchup with the Browns. This is undoubtedly due to Joe Burrow’s calf injury sustained during training camp. He is expected to suit up for the opening game but might be less effective since he hasn’t practiced. But the Bengals are shooting for the Super Bowl this year, so expect Cincinnati to win and cover the spread for this one.

The league is heightening our anticipation of Aaron Rodgers’ return by making us wait till the last game of Week 1. It promises to be an exciting matchup between Buffalo and New York and between Rodgers and Josh Allen. The Bills are two-point favorites to win against their AFC East rivals but win or lose, they have a new contender for the top spot of the division. It might get crowded at the top.
